Very sad. ive posted some pics, first we have this wonderful lady we found on the island of barc, that made homemade wine out of her home. after croatia, sandie and i parted in mostar, hercegovina. Here there was a couple of battle. muslims and bosnians fighting the serbs and then the bosnians and the muslims had a war. this has left the city divided and all quite demolished. I then hopped on to sarejevo. the sarajevo rose is from bombs dropped killing several people. they have fill them in around the city with red paint. i hit montenegro, kotor for a couple of days. such a beautiful city. there were cats everywhere. I then headed to albania. i think the wiring of the city kind of reflects the country...unorganize and ugly. i did not really find the country that intresting...except for the crazy bunkers when i left.

"...small concrete domes enver hoxhas paranoid concrete legacy built to repel the threat of foreign invasion and can resist full tank assault.

Mr hoxha hired a chief engineer to design a super resistant bunker who then had to vouch for his creations strength by standing inside it while it was bombarded by a tank....the estimated number of these concrete look out posts is 700,000"
-lonely planet
then i did very quick trips to bulgaria, serbia and now i am in romania. we leave tomorrow to turkey...i probably wont blog until i am home safe and sound.

we bought a nice bottle of type='text'>where the hell am i?

so while sandie roams with the roma...i have traveled to all many of the same locations...but missed the romas.

i last posted in croatia. i loved it there. we spent some wonderful time on the island in brac. tasted some wine made in someones garage and ate lots of amazing fruit. we saw on the island growing wild kiwi, grapes, and lots of olives. on leaveing the beach one afternoon, sandie thought it would be nice to try some green olives. her face grimmiced...the same as when she tried this liquar called (i forget) that is made from grapes...tastes like vodka.

after croatia...i ventured to Mostar where there was a pretty grusome war. from my understanding the first wave of the war was serbs against bosnias...then it was the bosnians agains muslims. the town is divided. they say in the lonely plantet book that they are divided by the river but from speaking to the locals that is not true. its actually quite wrong. they do not mix though. i stayed with this interesting couple that are into yoga, a spanish woman and her boyfriend that is german. such an exotic mix.

i then headed off to sareyvo. i stayed at the same hostel as sandie. i had the adjoining room to some other traveler in my private accomidation...although i must say i was the one bouncing into his room while he was laying in bed, innocently reading a magazine. i went on the same tour. learned tons about the war. the following night i stayed with a bosnian. i met his friends and got their personal views of the war...which were even more enlightening. they were all in their late 20's and 30's. they were in the young adults when the war happened. they all had somehow escaped the war...through the tunnel. they also told me how most believe that is was AMERICA who had started this war. it had orignally started with mafia shootings in the city that progessed to war. but they all seem to universally feel that is was americans fear of communism that fuel and supported the war. they feel that america has full power of the failed UN, and power over NATO to finish the war in 6 days.

i then moved on to Kotor, Montenegro.

what a beautiful city. southern europes largest fjord. walled city with great food. just great.i stayed with a sea captian on break. i wandered the city walled ruins and then had a large lunch served by his mother. this is a serious sea town. he is from a long line of sea captians. it was really facinating to visit the museum about the history of the ships in the area. every man i met was a sailor.

i then took serveral buses to albania. what a pity. i really cant say i liked this country. first off, my book only showed 1 border crossing. when i got to the capital of montenegro...they said i could only get to the border by taxi. 25 euros=25km. thats ALOT! i laughed at them....but then remembered sandie had taken a taxi so thought ...well i guess i have no choice. so i agreed. go in the taxi and half way there...he needs another 6 euros to get to the ACTUAL border. ...ok. now 31 euros. this is to go like...almost no distance but scary turny roads. i get to the border...albanian tax 10 euros! then on the other side...i want a mini bus they ALL tell me NO BUSES...take a taxi.... 15 -20 euros. i tell them all to go to hell and find my mini bus. these are the people i dont like.

i stayed in albania 2nights. there is not much to see. the architecture is not interesting. the mayor of the city is apparently a bad artist and had them paint all the ugly communist buildings with stupid, obnoxious colors. its painful to see and not even humorous. there is A mosque.i visted the national history musuem which was interesting and learned about Skanderbeg who kicked some serious ottomen ass!

i was then stuck in the extremely unintresting archtectured city for 12hours because my host was very busy. i was sad. boston and albany has more history.

i then got a bus ticket to macedonia, where i am currently. i got to the border after 2 bus connections...then had to walk the border for 3km. that was actually beautiful in the mtns. sheep were grazing, and then i got to see TONS of the infamous albanian bunkers...then i realized wandering around freely that ..hey ding dong...remember LAND MINES!...i stuck to the road and there were no problems. :)

i got to the border and go a ride to the town i wanted, struga. this was a town 15km from the lake town of Ohrid. said to be the most beautiful placein macedonia.

i stayed with a peace corps volunteer and 3 guys from hospitality club. one brit, one bulgarian and one guy from holland. i spend a day with the brit and bulgarian exploring the lake and monestaries. it was quite lovely. they both had interesting quick witted personalities that was very enjoyable. i then hitched a ride with them the following day to skopje, the capital. where i am currently. we climbed a mtn to visit a treskavec monastary on the way and then they dropped me off. today i stayed with a security guard for the american embassy. we climbed a mtn that holds a 70meter cross. then had a large lunch where i tried lots of local cuisine.

tomorrow i am off to sofia, bulgaria...then kosovo and then belgrade...meeting sandie in translyvania. cant wait!
<img width='1' height='1' So far its been great, we have met amazing people on our travels. we have been traveling for 90 days! and we have 72 days left of FREEDOM (before we have to get jobs and live the bourgeois life). we are more than halfway through our trip.

we have hit india, thailand, cambodia, laos, vietnam, china, germany, denmark, sweden, finland, estonia, latvia and lithuania. = 13 so far

next part of the trip- poland, slovakia, slovania, croatia, bosnia & hercegovina, albania, macedonia, serbia & montenegro, romania, bulgaria, turkey, egypt, morocco and FINALLY spain. 14.

wow. i have pictures to post but will not do it now, since i dont have the disk with me. im off to see the kgb musuem...tomorrow i will go to the national musuem. sandie and mom are off in trakai visiting the castle there. i went a couple days ago and was also able to sail around it. very nice day.

while i was in estonia, i stayed with a lovely girl that has a super talented brother, check out his music and art. www.pastacas.com which means ball point pen in estonia. and heres his label. www.kohvirecords.ee

along our travels we have realize how much we DONT want to be desk monkeys and have been trying to figure out a way to continue to travel...but possibly with a bit more style (hotels would be nice) but as i have yet figured out how to be a traveling artist...i have discovered cities i could work and LIVE in...and have been doing my part to network. I met lots of crazy creative people in Estonia, tallin...plus a great nightlife. i also have fallen for Vilnius and met some really interesting people working for cool magazines here, FHM and Cosmopolitan

ugh...i hate thinking about looking for a job. :(

bank of america STINKS

i am so not happy with bank of america. i hate that bank and will change as soon as i get home. my card receipt or maybe from a computer, and someone apparently tried to take money, this transaction didnt happen because this person plugged in the incorrect address and name. so what happens is that I need to get a new card. i guess i understand but what i dont understand is that if they are pluggin in the wrong information, like address and name, why should i be so worried. they dont know my password for my bank card...there must be a better way to protect.

anyway after almost 2 hours on call waiting...i am getting a new card issued. the biggest problem is that this is my only means of dollars...very upsetting. and the reason i REALLY hate bank of america is that i was told several different things. no one seems to know their job there.

i am still in Jurmala a beach town close to Riga and im heading to the city in a few hours. then off to Lithuania.

Museums

As sandie runs around getting all cultured I have actually regressed. While I was in tallinn, I did go to one nice museum...But then...I deviated. I went to the torture museum and then in Tartu I went to the toy museum. Equally as bizarre, actually. The puppets especially were creepy.

I am currently in Latvia, jurmala. This is a beach resort that is a little bit European that is just filled with Russians. In fact, EVERYONE speaks Russian and all the channels on TV are in Russian. I even had a little old lady sit down with me at an outdoor cafe with her pit bull and chat with me for an hour. Luckily for me the pit bull really like me...She kept on snuggling into me and wanting me to pet her.

I don't know how much more of the beach town I can take and I just realized, I haven't gone swimming this entire SUMMER! Estonia.
there is a lengend of the white lady. apparently on a full moon in august the full moon reflects onto the window and ghostly figure of a woman in white can be seen.they had a festival that i skipped but the stories and castle itself are great.
<img width='1' height='1' I had forgotten since the last 2 months I have been so far away from it. I must say I have alot of mix emotions about it. I have also discovered russian comes in handy.

I am a bit clueless where i will venture next...I will visit the old city here...and then i need to go to the ocean i think. unfortunately i am having a hard time finding FREE places to stay. i wish i had a tent right now...but the nights are very cool here.

i think this weekend i will go off to the type='text'>

So i havent posted in a while...sandie seems to be doing most so i have some pictures to post. we are off to some museums today, light (very light) shopping. then i will be meeting my swedish relatives. they are taking us to the country so it should be nice.

have really enjoyed staying here in stockholm. amazaing musuems...as well as denmark.

this is a bit old, sorry. but i forgot to put it up... this is the summer palace, china.

and on our last day sandie and i climbed around the great wall...it was hot and crowded.

our friend tobias was kind enough to bring us to the castle in denmark that was teh inspiration for hamlet
krosborg slot

while in denmark i went to the danish jewish musuem, the design was fairly amazaing, by Daniel Libeskind. he is apparently set to design the new world trade center. the musuem was not so great though.

it was very nice to be in copenhagen at the time we were because there was the annual jazz festival, lots of great, free music.

i went to an excellent musuem, the louisiana

we took a night bus from copenhagen to stockholm. then wander the streets in the morning waiting for the musuems to open up...

then found a nice park to nap in...

after being rested we ventured into old city...were i walked down the smallest street.

im not sure the order of events now...we also went to a <a installation altohugh, was extremely disturbing...im going back today.

one of the artists i studied in college had several sculptures there. nikki de saint phalle.
china

So, we are not in china....right now we are in Denmark, Copenhagen. i love it here...very beautiful.

ok brief updates...we were in china, ate lots of great food very very cheaply...stayed in a pretty cool youth hostel, enjoyed watching the game with lots of backpackers from all over the world. great fun.

sandie and I both visited the forbidden city, which I must say was a bit disappointing. Everything is under construction for the up coming Olympics. We both bought some great silk for our moms...yay for moms! Hopefully our moms will be making great things with the silk we bought.

The most exciting thing that happened was I GOT PICK POCKETED! This is very embarrassing to me because I consider myself very street smart and so I feel like a bit naive for it to happen. anyway I was walking around near Trainmen SQ. looking for our silk for moms when we were walking down a street and I was in a group of men and I guess sandie fell behind... they unzipped my bag and grabbed my passport holder that had the passport, money I couldn’t exchanged because it was so small...my WHO card(info of all my vaccinations from Peace Corps) and MY PLANE TICKET!!! then when I got to a corner I flung around, where my sunglasses case came out and I bent down to pick it up and one of the men kick it out of my reach. I then realized my bag was open....then I realized my passport holder was GONE! I thought it fell out. I then retraced my steps...3 x's. I then realized I had been pick pocketed...which I was in denial...but I knew that when people do this they grab the dough and then toss the rest...so I started looking in street alleys and garbage cans we got back to the "discovery" point and I saw the girl that was selling nuts on the corner and asked her in my animated way if she had seen a wallet...she pointed to the alley...THERE IT WAS minus all my lao, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thai money....which all equaled about 3 dollars!

I thought about returning and looking for this group of men and beating them....because Asian guys really aren’t that big. But o well. I got all my stuff back.

After that, sandie and I practiced getting pick pocketed...sandie is a good pick pocket it turns out...watch yourselves.

We went to the summer palace. We I forced sandie to buy a painting of a cat. Well not really but I didn’t make a purchase and sandie felt compelled to after the long time I spent with the shop keeper.

we visited the great wall...it was very hot and crowded.

Before we traveled up we bought some umbrellas to keep the sun away from our precious skin, so we went down a long line of vendors. Starting at 65 rmb and eventually haggling down to 8
rmb...sandie had the merchant wrapped around her arm to make the sale. Sandie was at one point yelping in pain from her grip.

a day before we had planned to leave for Germany the airline cancelled our tickets which caused us to be on the phone for more than 1 and 1/2 hours with Travelocity. Once sorted out we had a pretty scary ride with AEROFLOT. Not a good airline...actually horrible. I was amazed we landed in one piece. We had to stop over in Moscow. Sandie took lots of pictures of me sleeping on the floor in the airport. Not only have I taken after my mother in the photogenic area but I know am bordering narcolepsy. I sleep and am sleepy. We were slapped in the face on the rudeness in the aeroport.

We got to Germany, safe and sound...more to come.

-Jennifer

jen here!

we are now sweating in vietnam.

i forgot to mention in cambodia we ate some fried grasshoppers...didnt sample the cockroaches...but must say i did like the grasshopper. sandie had a hard time sticking it in her mouth to eat. she would giggle and then put it down until finally eatting it. i think the evil fish from thailand may have something to do with it.

sandie and i are now forgetting what day it is...only aware of the month. kind of nice.

laos was a bit uneventful for me, i wanted to see many things, 4,000 islands in the south, and a temple called wat poo. sandie ventured to a village and i tried to get myself a bus, but i ended up wandering around and getting pointed in the wrong direction. i was started to get upset and realized that....why get upset. so i spent the day in the bazaar. later got 2 days of very very cheap massages. (3 dollars)

we then spent a full 24 hours traveling on bus to vietnam. the first bus was really nice. we then landed in Dong ha...the middle of NO WHERE. got another bus to Hanoi...10hours and i was surrounded by freaks. i sat next to a man with a large butt and who continued to put his hands behind his head to sleep...which would put his left elbow directly in my face. i had 3 little monks behind me, kicking my seat...and then an obnoxious man that pushed over all the baby monks and layed across all the seats...and to get comfy this man put his feet on the back of my seat...(which i promptly swatted off) sandie had this cross eyed man next to her...and next to my other side i had this very drunk man, who seemed to be slightly crazy. i was happy to get off this bus.

its crazy here...compaired to where we have been. bought lots of clothes...and even had some clothes made.

<img style="FLOAT: left; We had a small crowd following us, wanting to take us to the destination, but had read in the guide book about various scams. buses that took travelers all night, then arriving in some back alley...this sounded horrible naturally so i was extra sensitive...i did not want to get scammed. finally after walking in the heat away from the border we found some guy that seemed like he may actually take us to where we wanted to go...and also for around what we wanted to pay. less than an hour into the trip our driver pulled over and said we had to switch cars and drivers to complete our journey...i started imagining driving for hours and ending up where we started. So our new driving immediately diviated from our road and started going down some little dirt road where i ...lost it. he spoke no english. so i started opening my door with the idea he would stop...no he didnt stop...so i continue to yell ...not knowing ANY thai or khmer...he doesnt konw english... so i started slapping his arm ...stop! stop! stop!....he made a phone call to his friend and then ...well we ended up on the correct road.

we found a decent AIR CONDITIONED hostel and showered and went for a walk in search of ATM~! they dont work here. we then exchanged money...apparently the guy that we shared a taxi with told us that they use US dollars here...and my friends and family know...I DONT LISTEN. so i exchanged cash for the local currency...$1 = 4000riels. So i know what it feels like to be a rich mafia guy.

Today we walked and walked and walked around Angor wat, Bayon. Really amazing temples. i have to say, the most interesting historical site i have seen yet. we also saw monkeys, and oddly a random crab (bizarre)...and lots of dogs and puppies. i was keeping my eyes open for elephants but none to be seen. they are busy hauling tourists around.

Next up is massages from the blind (there is a school for the blind that are trained in massage therapy.

soon will buy air tickets for Laos (leave on saturday i think) then bus over to vietnam...and take a train to china!

still in kazakhstan

Hello-

I'm in Kazakhstan still.
